Chris Cortez

Co-Owner, Link Creative Space | founder & ceo, houston healthy hip-hop | Co-Owner & Director, FLY Dance Company

Chris Cortez is a Houston-based creative educator, entrepreneur, performer, and B-Boy whose Hip-Hop journey began in 1998 as an 8th-grade student at Spring Oaks Middle School. While at Spring Oaks, Chris had the opportunity to learn Hip-Hop dance from Kathy Wood, who was his dance teacher and later became a mentor and major inspiration in his life. Kathy’s passion for dance, education, and youth helped Chris see the power of Hip-Hop as a way to inspire and empower young people. Inspired by that experience, Chris founded Houston Healthy Hip-Hop in 2009, creating programs that combine dance, creativity, education, and mentorship to provide positive opportunities for youth. Chris later became a Co-Owner and Director of FLY Dance Company, helping bring the company back from hiatus and contributing to its continued success and growth. His journey with FLY allows him to continue the legacy that first inspired him as a young dancer. Chris has also worked with the Houston Rockets, contributing to professional dance and entertainment productions and working alongside members of the Rockets entertainment team. Today, Chris serves as Co-Owner of Link Creative Space, a creative community where kids, families, artists, and entrepreneurs can learn, connect, create, and grow. From being inspired by his teacher in a middle school dance class to creating opportunities for the next generation, Chris continues to use Hip-Hop, creativity, and mentorship to make an impact in Houston and beyond.
